Heraldic images featuring a "pelican vulning" refers to a pelican injuring herself, while a "pelican in her piety" refers to a female pelican feeding her young with her own blood.Reconceiving the idea of Christ-like self-sacrifice, she depicts a stylised vulning pelican mother feeding her brood with her own flesh and blood, framed by a circle and scrolls that suggest the provision and continuity of life (Fig. 9.7).
